The Scottish Trifecta

Hi everyone!

This is just a quick post about Burns' Night, which occurred the day before I left for Amsterdam! Burns' Night is a holiday here in Scotland, and it's celebrated by eating a traditional Scottish meal (at least, that is how I celebrated it). One of my flatmates, Hannah, was having a Burns' Night dinner in our flat, and she was kind enough to let me join in! And believe it or not, I actually had a little bit of everything.

For those of you that aren't familiar with my eating habits, I'm rather picky. I like to stick to foods like pasta, and sandwiches, and (most) meats, and I don't typically stray very far from that. However, I figured since I'm in Scotland I may as well try everything once and I went against all the advice I had previously been given and I had myself a true Scottish meal!

Dinner!
The meal consisted of the following: haggis, neeps, and tatties! I had some Irn Bru to drink, and for dessert, there were coffee cupcakes (not necessarily Scottish) and tablet (very Scottish)! I had both vegetable haggis and meat haggis that night. I'll be honest, I mostly ate the vegetable haggis because I couldn't bring myself to eat more than a forkful of the meat haggis purely because I knew what it was. If you don't know what haggis is, you can read about it here (the link opens in a new window and also explains a little about Burns Night). The vegetable haggis was good!! The potatoes were delicious as well. I'm not too big a fan of Irn Bru, but that might be because it smelled like the medicine you take when you have strep throat and you can't swallow pills (aka me until about two years ago). Sidenote: Coca-cola is the number one selling soft drink in every country in the world except for Scotland, where it is Irn Bru. Irn Bru is basically orange cream soda. I'm not a fan, but I know plenty of non-Scots that like it just fine! For dessert, I had some tablet! Tablet is a Scottish dessert and is basically sugar and condensed milk. VERY sweet, so I couldn't eat much, but it was good anyway. :)

That's all for now, I'll have a post about my adventures in Amsterdam hopefully later tonight!!

Love you, and I'm glad to hear some of you have been getting my postcards!
Mel
