Let the adventures continue!
Monday morning, Michaela and I headed off to the beach for a bit, had some lunch on La Rambla, and then went to the airport. The airport was pretty exciting. I was lucky enough to set off the metal detector (I think?) so I got patted down and I also had to put my feet into a "Shoe Analyzer," which was basically me standing on a box until the security lady told me I could get off. We found our gate, and then we learned that our flight was going to be delayed three hours! How exciting! We had already gotten there early, so we had roughly five hours of AIRPORT EXCITEMENT ahead of us. For dinner, we dined on cheese baguettes and a pack of Oreo's that cost me 2 euros. We also played a very entertaining game of Hangman which consisted of words such as, "rainbow of imagination" and "I need Katniss like I knead bread" and "render." Good times in airports. We eventually made it onto the plane, where I promptly fell asleep, and woke up upon landing in Portugal! Once we got to our hotel, we decided to ask the concierge what the best way to spend our brief time in Lisbon was, and they sold us some guided tour tickets for 8:30AM the next morning.
Monday morning we woke up like the champs that we are, had breakfast at the hotel, and made it to the lobby in time for our bus to come pick us up from the hotel. The tour was conducted in five languages, Portugese, Spanish, German, French, and English. We stopped at the Tower of Belem, the Monument of Discoveries (dedicated to navigators, not magicians or Darwin like I had imagined), and also to the Coach museum! Originally, I wasn't too thrilled that we were dedicating a decent part of our short time in Lisbon to the Coach museum... but it was actually really cool! The chariots were amazing and unbelievably crazy cool to look at in real life. And they were very old and kept in great condition. Basically it was awesome.
We also got to walk through town and have a wine tasting on our tour. Did you know that Portugal is famous for Port Wine and things made out of cork? I didn't. They literally had everything you could imagine made out of cork. Hats. Purses. Shoes. Tables. Wallets. Postcards. It was crazy! And also slightly weird. Our tour ended in the middle of Lisbon, which was nice for the people who were aware of that fact and wanted to wander around town. Michaela and I, on the other hand, would have loved to wander around town except we were under the impression that we would be dropped off again at our hotel. We explained our predicament to our tour guide who said that as long as we didn't mind sitting on the bus for an extra stop or two, they would take us back to our hotel. What ended up happening was everyone got off the bus except people who had booked a transfer to their other tour, we went to the main bus meet-up place, everyone got off (including the tour guide) except Michaela and I, and then the driver drove the two of us back to our hotel. It was pretty exciting having the entire coach bus to the two of us. We each got to sit in our own seats and everything!
We were exhausted and in desperate need of naps, so we decided to have room service for lunch. I flipped on the TV and guess what was on? The figure skating world championships! OBVIOUSLY we had to watch them, and this is when I decided that Michaela and I were born to be a tag team of figure skating commentators. Just wait. It'll happen. Icenetwork here we come!
As some of you may know, there isn't a lot to do in Lisbon besides what we had already done. And also, they don't show movies in English in France. Because of these two things, we decided to go see The Hunger Games (otherwise known as Los Juegos del Hambre and Os Jogos da Fome)! Michaela hadn't seen it yet, and it's my goal to see it in five different countries, so we figured this was the perfect time. We got to the theater at 3:15 because I thought the movie started at 3:30. It actually started at 3, so we had to wait until the next one started at 6:15. Fortunately, Michaela and I are very good at entertaining ourselves for hours on end. We also had a lovely dinner of chocolate cake and ice cream while waiting for the movie to start. While nobody speaks very good English in Portugal, they DO show their movies in English with Portugese subtitles. So not only did we get to see The Hunger Games, but we also got to see it IN ENGLISH. It was beyond exciting and I still love it more than anything. And that ended Tuesday!
Wednesday was full of more hours spent in airports and then I somehow ended up back in Glasgow for a brief amount of time before leaving for ROME at 5:15AM Thursday morning!! More stories to come!
